of the sacrifices of u.s. troops and their families, and he looked ahead at home and abroad. he was somber, almost still behind the desk in the oval office, where he noted it all began. >> from this desk, 7 1/2 years ago, president bush announced the beginning of military operations in iraq. >> reporter: that night was filled with the shock and awe of american military might. but history has its own deep secrets. and what unfolded was beyond anyone's imagining. and so, all these years later, president obama declared this historic milestone. >> tonight, i am announcing that the american combat mission in iraq has ended. operation iraqi freedom is over. and the iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country. >> reporter: he tried to sum up what the war in iraq has meant, and what has been accomplished by the more than 1.5 million americans who have served there. >> they defeated a regime that terrorized its people. together with iraqis, and coalition partners who made huge sacrifices of their own, our troops fought block by block to help iraq seize the chance for a bette

>>> thanks for joining us. president obama declares combat mission over. the question is what is the direction going forward. did we get answers tonight? we'll talk about that with my guests. also tonight, growing fear and opposition to a mosque in the buckle of the bible belt, and growing fears within the mosque, worshippers are afraid of their neighbors in some cases and the fear is growing. local muslims getting police protection after an apparent arson attack. we'll ask the leaders why she thinks they are praying there for decades and should not be able to build this place of worship. >>> and an update on earl. a category 4 monster, still heading for the east coast. we could know more about it, when and where it will hit and we'll bring that to you first. >>> but we begin, efforts to stop the mosque. not the one two blocks from ground zero here in new york but one in mo more missboro, tennessee. the spokeswoman for the mosque says they are scared. >> it's very hard to explain to children what's going on. it's very hard to explain to little kids, when they ask you, mommy, a

the u.s. military as it gave control officially to iraqis and stepped back into the supporting role. but biden told "today" show's matt lauer it doesn't mean the u.s. forces are now out of the fight. >> we still have 50,000 troops in place who can shoot straight, who are totally capable of combat if that became necessary in the interim. >> well, the president is now making a quick pivot to the next foreign policy challenge. it is a big one. posting the first big face to face talks between israeli and palestinian leaders in two years. mike baa caro is joining us here with the latest. >> reporter: peace between the israelis and arabs is a goal that has frustrated the presidents since 1947, but this is the scene of one in 1979 where jimmy carter and anwar sat here on the front of the white house lawn. and today george mitchell is telling reporters that there's a window of opportunity now for a two-state solution between the israelis and the palestinians. the first direct talks in almost two years. the first thing on the table is some short-term business. that settlement moratorium on t

islamic world, to end this rift towards islamic terrorism is to the attack us. i believe that's the central question going to war with iraq that should have been asked and answered. thanks for being with us. right now keith olbermann picks up our coverage adds we await president obama's address. >>> good evening from new york. president barack obama will address the nation a little more than a minute from now. it is time, he will say, to turn the page. turn the page, he will say, in an unusual twist. in a speech about the end of the combat mission in iraq, to focus on jobs at home. it was september 11th, 2001, that defense secretary donald rumsfeld, according to former bush adviser, richard clark, said afghanistan didn't have enough targets to bomb. iraq has lots of good targets. on october 31st, 2003, according to an official british account of their meeting, president bush said he was considering flying a plane to draw fire, providing a rationale to invade, even if inspectors found no evidence of wmd. on march 19th, the united states invaded iraq. the war would drag on for s

to have you with us tonight. is it really a scam? is it all about making money or does beck really want to bring this country back to god, what do you think? >> well, according to "forbes" magazine, the beck enterprises made $32 million last year. so unless glenn beck is prepared to turn all of that money over to charities, i think that we can clearly and safety call him on his hypocrisy. and maybe it's a good campaign to lead, ed. we encourage beck to give the money away, because he wouldn't want to profit from something, right? so i think there's a strong, clear case about what you were saying, the money is a driving force here. and the irony of this man, sort of taking on the mantle of dr. king, you know that dr. king would be right up on the board with van jones and color of change and all the other people that beck has gone after. >> why is it then when liberals are passionate, we're labeled as angry? yet when conservatives get passionate, they're just great americans? is this just a conversational trip that these folks are on, what do you think? >> well, it's the fact that they're
